Marquesa & Christmas Islands: 5 - Papeete, Tahiti to Honolulu, Hawaii

Saturday, April 19, 2008

Air Tahiti Nui was delayed about an hour on departured again. The airline lounge had wireless internet so I was able to get some photos and updates away while we were waiting. The flight was smooth and comfortable, the security and other formalities friendly and easy.

A flight from China had arrived at LAX just before us, so the wait for immigration was long and the line barely moved. We taxied to the Sheraton Four Points near the airport at about 11 AM, left our luggage while our room was prepared and taxied to a good sized shopping mall about three miles away where we pickup up some needed items, including a lens for Marilynn's camera.

Wireless internet in the hotel was fast and free, so we managed to catch up on correspondence, updates and photos. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was excellent and we got a decent night's sleep.

Yesterday we took the hotel shuttle to the airport, checked our bags and went through security with no delay. The flight was comfortable, arriving in Honolulu at noon local time. Our room at the Royal Hawaiian was ready when we arrived so we were soon swimming the in ocean, although it was a touch cool for my spoiled taste.

We have stayed at the Royal Hawaiian, which fronts on Waikii Beach, many times - when changing planes or just having a time zone change break en route to or from Asia. The old style, low rise hotel is called the pink palace because of its colour, and the theme is carried on with pink bathrobes, sheets, pillow cases, bath mats, towels, face cloths, tablecloths, napkins, lamps and so on. Our four poster bed even has pink curtains and roof! Not the most masculine theme.

This morning's breakfast was by the pool, then I finished a book while Marilynn went off on a successful shopping trip. In the evening we went to the Cirque Hawaii show. They had some talented people playing to the half full house, but the show was certainly not world class.

Tomorrow morning our flight is on Air Pacific, the Fijian Airline that will drop us on Christmas - or more properly Kiritimati - Island in the country of Kiribati. The language there is Gilbertese. In Gilbertese 'ti' is pronounced 's'. Thus it is 'Kee-rees-mas' Island in the country of 'Kee-ree-bas'.
