Australian Trains 2025: 3 - Perth

Thursday, April 17, 2025

We stayed around the hotel in the morning getting packed and organized for another flight. We shared a taxi to the airport with a woman scientist from Sydney University. Waited two hours in the lounge for the flight to Perth. This one was a very comfortable Qantas flight of a bit over 3 hours. The in flight service was excellent.

We were met with a wheel chair and taken to the taxi area. A very pleasant driver from Pakistan took us to the Waterfront Double Tree hotel. We arrived at our hotel at about 5:30 PM. This time we had a beautiful sea view from our room.

The bar was on the 18th floor. It turned out to be very popular for local night life - there wasn't an empty seat. A single woman at a table with three chairs invited us to join her - her mate worked 5 week shifts on one of the outer islands. There was a very loud band playing, requiring loud talk to communicate. After having drinks and a light dinner of prawns, we headed for bed.

In the morning we went for a walk along the waterfront where there was a dock for scenic cruise boats and even a merry-go-round. We booked a cruise down the river to the ocean, then had lunch at a restaurant called the “Riverside” where I had fish and chips. It was the best battered fish I had ever eaten.

The cruise down stream on the very wide Swan River was pleasant, with lots of windsurfers, other small boats and many big marinas with masses of private boats. We turned around to head back upstream right where the river entered the ocean. There were a number of large sea-going freighters loading or unloading cargo.

It was Easter Friday and everything on the dock was closed. We went to the panoramic restaurant in the hotel for a great rack of lamb dinner. All restaurants that were open charged a $10 surcharge due to the holiday and higher staff costs.

After breakfast in the morning with the lady whose table we had shared last night, we called an Uber to take us to Cottslo beach where we had a good lunch in an old classic building overlooking the beach and a large ocean swimming area. Marilynn called an Uber to get us back to our hotel. He gave us a tour of Perth City at Marilynn's request.

At the hotel we were picked up at 3:35 PM and taken to the train station, where we entertained by a violinist and a guitar player. There was copious free wine and snacks before boarding the train. Dinner was served on the train after departing the station. We then retired to our double bed room with comfortable beds.
